ALL DIVISIONS – ROSTER DEADLINE OF AUGUST 29th – number of REGIONAL SPOTS (this is new) and NATIONAL WILDCARD SPOTS (as in the last two years) depend on getting in VALID rosters to HQ by AUGUST 29th.  So if you want a shot at getting to regionals, let’s get as many valid rosters in as possible.  Saves $50 (UPA late registration fee) and increased our shot at getting more bids at Regionals.  There’s a ONE-NAME College/HS exception!  See below for more!

OPEN ONLY

RAINOUT – new location TURKEY SWAMP Sept 27-Sept 28

DIRECTIONS AND NEW INFO AT BOTTOM OF PAGE

WOMEN: PHILADELPHIA’s FAIRMOUNT PARK – you captain will know where your captains’ meeting will be held and your SC will be handling this division at this other site.

COED: LOWER PERKIOMEN PARK (OAKS, PA) - Your SC will be handling this division at this other site on SEPTEMBER 27 and SEPTEMBER 28.

PAYMENT AFTER SEPTEMBER 8: $125 check made out to your SC (Karen Grossberg for Women; Chris Turner for Mixed; Brian Canniff for Open)  $25 deposit check made out to your SC.  Bring your checks to the tournament if you have not paid already.

Each team will provide 2 checks (possibly 3 if roster isn’t completed on time!)

  1. $100 (if in Brian’s hands by September 8, 2002, otherwise $125 paid at the tourney).

  2. $25 deposit check  (play all games, observe all rules).  This check will be destroyed.  Give me a SASE if you would prefer me to return the check, and I may be able to return it (all depends on time which is tight).

  3. $50 check made out to “UPA” if roster requirements aren’t met by Aug 29th.  Plan on bringing this check.

  4. Other check for people whose check was in the mail – if you’re not on the list I get from HQ, you will have to bring proof of payment or pay twice.  You can handle the refund after Sectionals w/ UPA if you’ve paid twice.  Better collections have allowed the UPA to add a full-time Youth Development person, so no proof of payment = no play!

We will also be providing some bagels, bananas, and water.  Overage will be used for something worthwhile.

SCORE REPORTING: Find your SC to report scores since all SCs are players as well as volunteers.  There’s no paid staff to take care of us – they save that for regionals (er... nationals).

There are no pre-announced byes at this time due to an even number of teams.  Even if a team or teams drop, we will be unable to announce a bye so please show up ready to play for first round.  We apologize for any inconvenience.

There is CAMPING at the park.  See http://www.monmouthcountyparks.com/parks/turkey.asp  I'm working on finding the hotel list for TURKEY SWAMP.  It is off-season and right near Great Adventure so there should be a decent number of motels w/in 20 minutes.

WHO IS PLAYING AT TURKEY SWAMP?

EVERYONE is playing their games at TURKEY SWAMP.  We will likely have 6 rounds on Saturday and 6 rounds on Sunday.  This means that games will have to be played quickly, started on time, ended on time, and teams hustling when they have to change fields the next round.  Schedule is still being determined as we've had a few teams drop from the tourney (we're still a *big* tourney).

CARPOOL

For the love of God, carpool.  We have about 6 more teams coming than my outside early guesstimate.  Please please please carpool so we don't overwhelm them w/ cars.  It's good for the environment but it will also help us preserve our goodwill w/ the site.  (They let us get a permit there WELL AFTER their established deadlines as a favor.  They did it twice, actually, the second time allowing a weekend shift b/c of Isabelle)  They'll have someone there to direct parking - they are the only park I know w/ a big 'frisbee parking' sign they set up.  Park close, park legally (they will ticket or tow), park where they tell you to park.

6 ROUNDS?  AY CARAMBA!

Your cooperation in starting, capping, and ending games will be appreciated.  It is *suboptimal* but so was this whole hurricane deal.  BE PREPARED TO STAY and PLAY LATE ON BOTH DAYS.  Sorry Pittsburgh-ites. :(

THE DREADED "NO ULTIMATE ZONE"

There will be a "NO ULTIMATE ZONE" right near where we park.  I'm not going to have time to rope it off or cone if off but we CANNOT play there.  or walk there.  or warm up there.  They are closing that field for a special event and they made it painfully clear that it would be BAD if we played there.  (This came from county people above the supervisor of the park - the last thing we want to do is get the bosses mad at supervisor mad at ultimate/me.)

NO ULTIMATE ZONE: right as you come in from the main parking lot there are 3 fields to the LEFT of the road.  That's the no-play zone.  We'll be on the RIGHT side of the road and up the hill and playing everywhere else.  Please stress this to your teammates with my thanks and appreciation.  It is going to be especially tempting b/c teams have byes and the grass there is some of the nicest in the park. :(

UPA ROSTERING STUFF

you teams need to bring

a) proof of payment

b) money for UPA membership (preferably one big check made to UPA)

This is esp true for COLLEGE 'one-name' rostered teams.  I got NOTHING on you guys and the UPA wants you paid up.  The CLUBBIES should bring a checkbook - some of you have up to 3 guys showing not paid.  I'll try to follow up so you know who it is beforehand, but time is INSANELY tight due to all the problems we've had this year.  My apologies for not spelling it out to you more clearly if I don't get to it.

TEAMS I KNOW HAVE DROPPED:

ENFORCERS (holidays), COLUMBIA HIGH SCHOOL (other commitments).  As far as I know everyone else is still coming.  DIV II should have 5 or 6 teams in it for Saturday.  DIV II is important to us all (see very bottom optional reading for more on that).

FORMAT/SCHEDULE/BYES:

Byes will not be revealed since a team dropping means that the schedule changes.  Format: t/b/a for DIV I and DIV II - I'm trying to get it proofed.  DIV II is presently *5* teams for 4 games Saturday and more games Sunday (blending in w/ lower Div I teams - 2 games scheduled for each team).  The UPA Formats guy (Adam Tarr) has done a nice job of helping to come up with a really good, creative format for us.  Schedule: t/b/a but at this point likely 6 rounds each day.

SCHEDULE: present schedule does NOT boil off pool winners so 5 (better team of 2nd place teams) will get a shot at 4.
