Retired to Stud Tournament 2
November 1, 1997
at Moravian Tileworks in Doylestown, Bucks County, PA
|
Results:
Severe rain made the day pretty tough. 12 teams braved the rain, most for two rounds. 4 teams played a third round, and hats off to them!
Pretty tough introduction to tourneys for UPS: they aren't always so nasty, but the parties aren't
always so cool, either. Hot meal and hot showers were enjoyed by all! We're thankful that both
the party host and the caterer arrived more than an hour early so
we could get out of the elements and enjoy some good Flying Fish Beer and Peggy's excellent cooking!
Btw, this is the same location, caterer, and fields from the PADA Charity Hat Tourney, the Mikey Spring Thing, which last year
raised over $1,000 for the a Bucks County Youth Program where Peggy and Brian Boger (short guy who was getting his ass kicked by Melanie of
El Nino in b-ball) both work. Brian helps with the Spring Thing, and Peggy donates her time for that event. It's in early March, so look forward to getting out for that.
I believe that George Wong's CRASH from NY won the B pool. They were one of the last team's playing. Being smart is its own reward: so Bottom Feeders don't win
anything for bringing a tent to the rainy Tileworks, except our admiration.
In A DIVISION, El Nino beat Spare Tire, lost to Studs, then disappeared as many of their players were sick or on the verge of illness. The aforementioned
Melanie won the party singlehanded. Spare Tire lost to 'Muses in the first round. Muses went 2-1, losing only to Rage.
'Muses beat Hoover in the other lunatic round (round 3) game 15-10. The hosts Retired to Stud came out lackluster in their game against El Nino, picking
up the pace after half to take the game from their skilled (and illed) opponents.
Hoover made a respectable showing against Rage (losing 15-10 or so) while warming up to take their revenge
against this year's trash-talkin' rivals, Studs. Hoover, much improved from the Spring, with a strong 5th place finish at Sectionals and
a good showing at Regionals, was ready. Supplemented with Chang and Auvel (QCity's pair of ex-Diablo-ites searching for team du jour), the monstrous Hoover
squad smelled blood in the water. Clapper, Dworkin, Cohen, Vassalo, Hamid, Rosser, Rosie, and other great Hooverites were ready to hand it to the Studs. Hard.
Rick, with his usual flair for leadership, inspired and mustered his
minimal RTS resources. He was annoyed at the co-org's pessimism, and displayed no doubt that we'd win.
"A" level Dillon, Rick, and Brad, were backed up by Stud's regulars McAlary, Canniff, Mittin (who was concussed during the 2nd point), and Bill T. Rookie Dan S, Brad's soccer-playuing
twin Scott, and Rich F. (cut from Hoover earlier in the year) rounded out the light squad. The RTS zone, sharpened against QCity in
Sectionals and Regionals, was up to the challenge presented by Hoover's attempts to break it. The combination of the slightly different zone and the addition of many players who hadn't practiced together took their toll.
The Studs roared out in front 5-0, taking advantage of unforced throwing errors in the high winds and cold rain. At 9-2, the seemingly interminable game was capped.
Hoover then had fun,
and played their game with even better spirit and displayed joy for the game. They started scoring points, and it looked like they might make it to 11 before the now-tired Studs. It wasn't to be, as the tired Studs put up 10-6, and ended the game at 11-8. With
another Paul McAlary game-winning hammer. We may cut him for throwing it.
The most spirited player of that game: Mike Clapper, twice calling himself OB in a game where blood ran hot. Runner-up for absolute Spirit, Paul McAlary.
Budget 12 teams @ $100 = $1,200 - 1,132 = $68 surplus.
Overage went to SILOAM, a spiritual ministry for persons living with HIV/AIDS, in Philadelphia, PA.

0. RAIN OR SHINE WE PLAY. The fields are a little rough to begin with,
and they don't seem to care if we trash them by playing on them when
they're wet.
1. Captain's meeting 9 am
First round 9:30
Party 4:30 - 5:00 pm start until whenever
no one has any bye rounds if all teams show and no new ones form
if we have an odd number of teams, some teams may have a bye round
as always, I'll do my best to let people know as early as possible if
they have a first round bye
2. Bathrooms: they're a hike, and they're over the hill by field 7.
Don't use the bathrooms inside the museum or we'll get in trouble. The
bathrooms we use are in their own little building.
2B. Parking. We're only allowed to Park in the lot near Swamp Road,
although there are a few other lots. I'll put up signs (likely on
Orange posterboard (note to self: get posterboard :) ) so we don't have
to pay for a guard to direct traffic ($$$$). It's a courtesy thing, so
let's all park in the right spot! Same as at other tourneys at this
spot, people who've been there before.
3. Let me know if you know your team is up for one day or two days. If
you don't know or aren't sure, that's ok, tell me that. I know that
Hoover, Lafayette, Fordham (short sunday), Eastern and the 'Muses are up
for two days. We'll figure out what's what at the party, but it looks
like there will be enough opponents for each team that wants to play a
second day to have 2 - 3 games on Sun.
4. Pools: Right now it looks like there will be a 5 team A division,
and 7 team B division. Each team in A plays at least 3 of the other
teams in 4 rounds. There is crossover play for 3 A and 3 B teams in
the current schedule. A division is RTS, Hoover, 'Muses, Spare Tire, El
Nino. B division is everyone else. :) I'll try to have some alternate
schedules made up in case the PADA Leaguers come in 2 teams, or another
A division team surfaces, or in case an A or B or both drop at the last
minute.
5. Rounds: it's late in the season, and it gets dark early. 4 rounds.
With 5 in A pool, it is tempting to go 5 rounds for a full round robin,
but I don't think that that is the best idea. As long as we have an
even number of teams, there won't be any byes rounds.
6. Fields: I'll be bringing trashbags. Please police your field when
you are done your last round. If it's the 4th round, please grab the
cones, too! :) THIS WILL REALLY HELP ME OUT A LOT! People were awesome
about that in the Spring, which was very very cool and helped encourage
me to run this tourney!
7. NO BOOZE at the Tileworks. It's the same facility we use for the
PADA charity Mikey Spring Thing, and the Spring RTS tourney(s?), and the
same County we have used for Mom's Day. No other illegal substances
either. . . they tend to haul people right down the road to the pokey
for that. Conservative town. . .
8. BEER: You must be 21 in the state of Pennsylvania to drink alcohol.
If you're under 21, don't drink. I think that that mainly applies to
college teams, but please tell your players and act accordingly.
8.A. FOOD: If by some odd reason your team gets to the party before
everyone else, don't take THIRDS before others have gotten FIRSTS. :)
There should be plenty of food for everyone, but our caterer tells us it
was beyond her experience to see people coming back for 4ths (women) or
6ths (men!) :) Her name is Peggy, and she'll be up front with the food.
Say hi to her. She works with Boger, and puts out a nice spread.
9. SHOWERS: There will be showers available at the party. Bring soap,
shampoo, and towels, as well as a change of clothes.

You can see last year's trophies at
http://www.canniff.net/rts/tourney.html
The women loved them, esp. the Spirit trophy, which didn't come out in
the photos (Ken doll hacked in half by my friend Mary, inserted into the
appropriate spot in a horse doll, with a gold juice lid for a disc). I
think Rochester won it, and they were psyched. Shrug. :)
